11:38 am - Hello

Saw your community and decided to join. I'm pro-fanfiction but I can see the other side to it too. It sucks when you love a show and someone writes crappy fanfiction that gives you the urge to attack the writer with a stapler or a wooden stake. I am an original fiction writer at heart since that's what I started with and believe that I'm really good at it too. I wont share my fanfiction in respect to the rules and feelings of those who run and are members of this site. But I do hope to share some of my orignal fiction soon and see how good I really am to you guys.

12:10 pm - Fanfiction & Copyright Infringement

I'm going to a Convention for JossVerse fanfic writers in a couple of weeks, and one of the panels is on fanfiction and copyright infringement. I was wondering if anyone in this community had any questions for the panel members that I could ask and report back on. Let me know. :-)

12:37 pm - Interesting article....

on fanfiction and legal and copyright implications can be found here. It's quite lengthy and very footnoted, and brings up some pretty interesting points. It was originally published in volume 17 of the Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Journal, 1997 (17 Loy. L.A. Ent. L.J. 651), and I thought this community might find it relevant.

11:30 am - New Topic For Debate

So in recent discussions the topic of historical fiction has come up, i.e. using real people from history in fictitious situations. This is common in films. Agilebrit pointed out "Shanghai Knights" using Arthur Conan Doyle and Charlie Chaplin. I know in "Ever After" they had someone portray Leonardo da Vinci, and in "A Knight's Tale" Geoffrey Chaucer was portrayed as a crazy drunk (although that movie was obviously trying to be fictional, as reality was distorted many times, particularly medieval people singing Queen's "We Will Rock You"). Could this be considered real person fic, or whatever you people call it? I don't know the terms, frankly the proper lingo doesn't interest me.

Of course there are situations where the original person oversees the film as an autobiography and even makes a brief appearance, like "Catch Me If You Can" (Frank Abagnale Jr.) and "American Splendor" (Harvey Pekar). Then there are those films based on autobiographies, like "Girl Interrupted".

But what about unauthorized biographies? Or what about films and novels that completely distort the truth about someone long dead with unproven theories? Is that considered a type of fanfic? I think someone said in another post the dead can't sue. What do you all think of that?

9:14 pm - Come On People

We're not four year olds here, we're all adults. Now I'd hate to be the type of moderator that would have to check each and every post and each and every comment to make sure the rules are being followed. I like the idea of free discussion and debate, not the idea that everything needs to be approved by one person. Now, I just want to reiterate some of the rules that don't seem to be being followed:

3. Feel free to debate the merits of fanfic. We welcome fanfic writers to share their views, but we do not welcome them to share their stories. Healthy debate is encouraged, but please, be respectful (see Rule #4).

4. Be respectful of our views and our hatred of this medium, and also be respectful of the views of others who may disagree with us.

6. Have a sense of humor! Yes, we are serious in our hatred of fanfic, but even we'll laugh at the really bad stuff (well, laugh at the writers, anyway). So sit back and enjoy.

I don't expect to change anyone's mind concerning fanfic, I'd just like to tell people why I hate it and try to explain my reasons, in the hopes that someone could at least understand my thoughts, even if they disagree with them. I don't want this community to turn into a big bitching ground, where we all personally insult one another. I really think it's possible to have rational discussions with people who have different viewpoints. But being a moderator for this community is really starting to make me wonder about that...

Please don't accuse me of being biased here toward any member of the community, I'm addressing this to everyone. I really don't think these childish arguments are getting us anywhere.

12:05 am - For agilebrit and anyone else interested

My first (and last) fanfic, just to prove it can be done. I'm ready for the comments about my writing being shitty, bring it on!!

Anthony's Lament (My apologies to Wes and Owen!!)

Ca Caw! Ca Caw!

"Quit it, Dignan," Anthony mumbled drowsily, pulling the bed sheets up to his neck and rolling over onto his side.

Ca Caw! Ca Caw!

"I mean it, Dignan, I'm trying to get some fucking sleep," Anthony repeated, louder.

Ca Caw! Ca Caw!

With this latest outburst, Anthony pushed the sheet away toward his feet and sat up, wide-awake, ready to sock his best friend with a pillow. But Dignan was nowhere in site; Anthony’s rude awakening was caused by the seagulls flying outside his window, not by his blond friend with the funny nose.

His bed was unfamiliar, as were the floral paintings on the walls. In his sleep Anthony had forgotten that he was spending the weekend at Elizabeth's beach house.

"God damn it," he said upon realizing where he was. It wasn't that he disliked Elizabeth, as he did like her, but he knew he didn't love her and never would. Anthony was tired. He was tired of pretending and he was tired of lying. He wished it had actually been Dignan ca-cawing, and not the birds on the warm beach.

"Anthony! You up yet?"

It was Elizabeth's familiar voice, calling from the other room and nudging him out of bed. "Yeah," he said, groggily. Elizabeth didn't bother knocking; she opened the door to wish him a good morning and see what he wanted for breakfast. She was wearing that white dress with the halter straps and little red flowers he had seen her in so many times before.

"I'll just make myself some coffee," he muttered.

"Are you sure you don't want something else? You can't live on coffee, you know."

Anthony didn't answer her. He put on his red sweatshirt and his sneakers and walked to the kitchen to make himself some coffee. But Elizabeth had already poured him a cup with cream and two sugars, just the way he liked it. He sat at the table and took a sip of the warm beverage. The hazelnut aroma poured forth from the mug. The scent reminded him of his home in Dallas and Sundays spent eating breakfast with his family. He missed Grace and wondered what she was doing now. Was she still sleeping? Or was she on the playground with her friends? Was she thinking of him?

His thoughts were interrupted by Elizabeth's prattle.

"What do you feel like doing today, Anthony?"

"I haven't really decided yet, I think I'll just see what I feel like doing when the time comes."

"Well, would you rather lay out or go water skiing? Today I was thinking of taking Daddy's boat out for a spin. What do you think? Anthony, are you listening? What do you think?"

Anthony did not know how to answer that question. He had run out of words. He really didn't want to be there with her, not then, not ever. He could not understand why, as Elizabeth was a beautiful and intelligent young woman. He should like her, he thought, shouldn't he?

All he knew was that there had to be something else out there, beyond the sun and sand; he felt trapped in that house with Elizabeth.

He decided he had to get away, fast. He couldn't answer that question, or any other questions of hers anymore. He set down his mug on the mahogany table and stood up from his chair. He retied the laces on his right sneaker, and ran out the door, onto the beach.

"Anthony! Where are you going?"

Anthony ran past the pastel condos and upright umbrellas that adorned the beach. He ran past children building sandcastles. He thought about Grace. He wished she could be there, playing in the sand. Suddenly he stopped running, and turned around. He realized he had been running for over half an hour. He had run nearly four miles.

He knew he had to go back, but with each step he took toward her house, the emptiness in his stomach and the pounding in his head worsened. He knew he couldn't go back to Elizabeth. He knew he couldn't go home to Grace, as he's an adult. He could go live with Bob or Dignan, but living with them wouldn't bring him any closer to what he desired. It would be the same old thing all over again.

It was now noon and the sun was hot overhead and the sand was burning his exposed toes. Anthony knew he had to make a decision fast. He walked along the ocean, avoiding the jellyfish that occupied the surf.

Unfortunately a young child hadn't been as watchful, and he was crying from the stinging tentacles.

"Hey there. Are you OK, little guy?"

The child continued to cry and clutch his sore legs. The boy was fair-skinned with light hair. He reminded Anthony of Dignan, 20 years earlier.

"You know something," Anthony said. "Maybe you should go find your parents, they'll make you feel better. They'll wash your legs off and give you a great big hug. Maybe they'll even buy you some ice cream, if you stop crying."

The child nodded, but continued to sob. Anthony wiped the tears from the little boy's face, and the child ran off in search of his family.

Anthony continued his walk along the ocean. He watched the wispy clouds move across the sky, blocking the sun, then passing over, allowing the sun's rays to tan the beachgoers again.

All of a sudden he just felt better. Elizabeth was so far from his mind. He wished he could spend the rest of his life just walking, running, drawing. He didn't want responsibilities. He needed to be liberated.

Anthony finally began his stroll away from the ocean, toward the land. He reached the boardwalk and continued to the street. He hailed a taxi and was on his way.

4:07 pm - A challenge to the community:

From the info page:
We're creative types who prefer originality in writing and we hate to see the creations of fellow artists and writers ruined by talentless individuals who place their original characters in disgusting or just stupid situations. Our basic motto: be original!!

Okay. According to the creators of this community, people who write fanfiction are "talentless." However, the creators of this community are "creative people"--and from that I gather you think you're pretty talented.

So, here's the challenge: Pick a fandom. Any fandom. Something you're very familiar with. Now...write a story within that fandom, with no original characters, but keeping the canon characters in character. No smut, and no stupid situations. It can be something as simple (heh) as a character reflecting about events that just happened. Do 1000-1500 words (more if you like). It shouldn't take more than a week.

You think it's easy? You try it.

Well, now that we finally have members of this community, maybe we can have a discussion? There's this Web site that's all about fanfic and the legality, there are also frequently asked questions. Just curious what you pro-fic people think of this. The law is never simple, but I think this site makes interesting points. What do you guys think?

12:18 am - My Turn

As co-moderator of this little community, I feel I have a comment to make to this sudden surge in backlash. This is not a serious hatred here, people. This was made out of fun in response to the numerous livejournal communities dedicated to fan fiction. This is also due to having friends that were so obsessed with fan fiction that all they would talk about is fan fiction.
With that in mind, there are many places for people who like fan fiction to go to. Try here. We all need to take a deep breath here. I have never commented in any of the fan fiction communities on livejournal declaring my dislike of fan fiction. I have an outlet for any annoyance of fan fiction - this community! We're a very small community compared to the numerous communities out there. If you don't like what we're saying you can always look away or not join. The fan fiction pointed out in this community is usually very extreme examples or something very comical like the community dedicated to Roy Orbison being wrapped in cling film.
So in conclusion...I'm sleepy! Can't we all just get along? Please?

10:25 pm - Wow!

Wow, this is so exciting. I can't believe people have found our little community. But it's occured to me that some people are afraid to join our community because they think that we will be unfriendly toward them. I think we all need to remember that we're in this world together and as Homey the Clown would say "Why can't we all just get along?" We're genuinely nice people here, just sarcastic from time to time.

Anyway, our community is slowly blossoming, and I hope someday we turn into a beautiful flower. Until then, an explanation of the stopthefic icon and another reason I hate fanfic:

Buffy's Sanguine Nipples. What does this mean? Frankly, I'm not sure. But that imagery (along with a certain tragic event I really don't want to get into right now, it's too painful to talk about) inspired my hatred of fanfic.

All I know is that a certain sexless creature from another planet used to spend all of her/his time locked in her/his room avoiding real people and writing Buffy fanfic. I believe he/she also liked to write about the girl from Seventh Heaven "with the nice rack". Or maybe he/she just liked to have dreams about her.

Well, whatever the case, this creature would send me its stories and even though I explained many times that I did not understand, as I never watched an episode of Buffy before in my life, it would not stop taunting me and sending me more... and more...

After reading about Buffy's nipples and how well the show used "pockets of time" I realized that I was put here on this earth for a reason: to stomp out this kind of unoriginal garbage. I did not choose this path, but rather it was chosen for me.

I was chosen to do it, and do it I shall. All I can do is ask for your help. Join my cause. Help me fulfil my life's work, as Gregory Peck would say, "for the love of God!"

This comm has already hit Fandom Wank. Congrats!

I actually agree with the philosophy of this comm. I recently went ballistic to this kind of crap. The argument used constantly is, "If you don't like it, don't read it!" I'm not reading this crap. This is just an attempt to stop some people's eyes from being burned within their skulls!

5:10 pm

A friend who we'll call "A" (no names mentioned) recently introduced me to the horrors of fanfic, and my life has changed for the worse in so many ways. I can no longer watch my beloved cartoons without picturing some sick, sweaty, baldheaded 45 year old guy sitting in a shabby basment appartment wearing grey, pizza spattered sweatpants and typing sick, sexual things about my favorite characters. It truly disgusts me to even imagine it.

I honestly do not care if my views go against the beliefs of others. The time has come, and I shall make them known:

I'm hoping that by becoming a part of this community, my painful mental wounds may begin to heal. The trauma has gone on long enough.

8:22 am - A Tragic Day in PA

It happened about four years ago, but the pain is still so real it could have happened just yesterday. I was searching online for some info on my favorite muppet, Elmo, and what I found shocked and appalled me.

I came across what I assumed would be a clean, family-friendly, smut-free tribute to the furry red guy with the dainty orange nose, but no...it was...sorry, this is still so difficult to talk about...it was a form of muppet porn cleverly disguised with the name "muppet slash". Thinking that this was some sort of tribute to Elmo by Slash, the multi-talented guitarist formerly of Guns 'N Roses, currently collaborating with Scott Weiland in Velvet Revolver, I clicked on the link, and my innocence was instantly shattered.

I will spare you the gruesome details, but let's just say that this Web site was not endorsed by the muppet I had grown to love, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the guitar prodigy whose songs had lifted me through such dark times in my life.

All of a sudden, the computer started to shake uncontrollably. The convulsions drew quite a crowd, as I was sitting in a crowded computer lab at the time this was happening. As the crowd got larger, my face got redder, and...well, I don't remember much of what happened after that. I guess I kind of blacked out, and when I came through, there were hundreds of fire trucks and ambulances crowding the streets outside the computer lab. People were running around in horror and rioting in the streets.

I can still smell the napalm.

So, to make a long story short, fanfic turned my life into a living hell. This is my story, and I encourage you to join us and share your own personal horror story. This is a place where we can share and hopefully, someday, heal, together. Thank you for listening. It is only with your help that I can someday begin to lead a normal life once more.
